CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER – November 2018 Meeting

Crimes in Commerce

Wrangler Joseph Dudek is stepping up to discuss crimes in commerce. He is replacing former Pooh-Bah Tom Prevas who will be accepting the 40 under 40 award from the Baltimore Business Journal, the same night.

Everyone knows that Congress can regulate interstate commerce. Fewer know that Congress has authorized criminal prosecutions for interfering in interstate commerce. For civil regulations, like wheat-price regulation, Congress is just managing a national market and it has broad authority. But when Congress enacts an overbroad criminal statute, it risks turning the Commerce Clause into a general police power and frustrating federalism. Joe will review five or seven cases, starting in 1942 and ending on the Supreme Court’s 2016 decision in Taylor v. U.S. Along the way, he’ll touch on crop rotation, Molatov cocktails, and gang violence—just enough intrigue to keep folks awake.

Joe is a civil and appellate litigation Associate with the law firm of Gohn, Hankey & Berlage LLP.  Prior to joining the firm, Joe worked for the City of Los Angeles, for an activist hedge fund in New York City, and for the Volunteer Legal Services Project for his hometown of Rochester, New York. He holds a J.D. from Columbia University and an A.B. from Lafayette College.

Registration for this event will close on November 12, 2018 @ 5:00 pm.

Despite her beginnings in an orphanage and her rare position as a southern, Jewish woman pursuing a legal profession, Margolin became an important and influential Supreme Court advocate.
