SUMMARY:Wranglers March 20\, 2025 Meeting - The Life of Dudley Field Malone
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for Thursday\, March 20 at 6:00 p.m. as Wrangler Eric Easton presents on the The Life of Dudley Field Malone. \nDudley Field Malone was a dynamic early 20th-century figure—an eloquent orator\, savvy political operative\, and sought-after lawyer involved in cases spanning civil liberties\, high-profile murders\, and celebrity divorces. A product of Tammany Hall\, he rose to prominence as a close ally of President Woodrow Wilson\, serving as Assistant Secretary of State and Collector of the Port of New York\, before breaking with Wilson over women’s suffrage. Malone defended figures like John Scopes in the “Monkey Trial\,” suffragist Alice Paul\, and Soviet envoy Ludwig Martens\, while also representing sports icons and mingling with Hollywood celebrities. His flamboyant life included appearances in gossip columns and films\, but also scandals\, financial troubles\, and a troubled personal life\, marked by divorce\, abuse allegations\, and later opposition to the New Deal and WWII involvement. He died in 1950\, leaving behind only a small unpaid salary claim\, but his legacy endures\, even inspiring a song in the Broadway musical Suffs. \nWe’ll be meeting at Sammy’s Trattoria in Mount Vernon\, located at 1200 N Charles St\, Baltimore\, MD 21201. \nKindly RSVP by March 17—we hope to see you there!
